The Board of Directors of the New Mexico Association of Grantmakers (NMAG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Frank René López as the organization’s new Executive Director effective July 6, 2020. López most recently served as the Director of New Mexico Programs at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Albuquerque. He succeeds Cathy Frey, who announced her plans to retire this year after 6 years of leadership at NMAG.

“At heart, Frank is a social entrepreneur,” Annmarie McLaughlin, Board Chair of NMAG said. “His unique experience and knowledge of New Mexico’s communities position him well to lead NMAG as a voice for our state’s social sector. The board looks forward to supporting Frank as the Executive Director.”

Prior to his role at the Kellogg Foundation, López served as the Executive Director of Ngage New Mexico in Las Cruces, and the Nonprofit Enterprise Center in El Paso, Texas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from the University of California Berkeley. His experience also includes nonprofit leadership consulting, grant-writing, fundraising, racial equity teaching, and social enterprise.

As Executive Director, López will also lead NMAG’s transition as the new home for the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNPE), effective July 1, 2020. Through this integration, NMAG will have an opportunity to greatly expand nonprofit capacity building services statewide with significant sector-level benefits and cost savings.

“We have many challenges in New Mexico, and COVID-19 has added to the stress on our communities,” López said. “I embrace NMAG’s commitment to serving our social sector in creative and influential ways.”
